Leon Nisenbaum was born in 1925 in Leningrad in a family of an engineer. After leaving school in 1942 he has been recruited in the army and directed in Lepelsky artillery school. Since 1943 he served in anti-tank artillery. After demobilisation in 1946 he was accepted to the faculty of monumental and decorative painting of the Leningrad high-school of V.I.Muhina.
He graduates in 1952, and addresses himself to the graphical design area in which he becomes one of the leading Leningrad's masters. His natural talent of a painter develops even in this quite specifical area. He makes design on envelopes for musical discs.
In 1956 Nisenbaum becomes a member of the Union of artists of the USSR.
In 60-70th the artist addresses to ceramics in which a unique and individual style was also developed.
From the middle of 70's Nisenbaum is totally devoted to painting, in which he concentrates his attention on the colorsphere, instead of outlining objects and people. The artist practically does not draw outside his studio. The paintings are executed very quickly, he is working simultaneously over several canvases. He is not totally neglecting figurative art, but he doesn't care a lot for the details.
From the middle of the 80's artists takes active part in exhibitions.
In 90s, after a trip to Israel, Nisenbaum addresses to a picturesque embodiment of landscapes of the Sacred earth, iconographic scenes, reflexion of life and traditions of hasidic jews.
The artist died in 2000 in St-Petersburg.
Works of Nisenbaum are in the State Russian museum, the Museum of Modern Art in St.-Petersburg, in private collections in Russia, USA, France, Israel, Sweden, etc.
